Port-A-Cath

In February I got a port-a-cath put in. Dad tells the nurses that “I’m a hard stick”. And, a few months ago during one of my OR appointments the anesthesiologist came to PACU to ask dad if he considered a port. That started the questions and the decision for me to get one. Yesterday, Monday, was the first flush.

The port needs to be flushed with heparin. Dad has to learn how to make and maintain a sterile workspace. And then how to insert the needle into my port and do the flush. That makes sure that there are no clots or anything in the line (catheter) to my heart.

Dad got to watch and train on a mannequin. It is called Chester. I included a pic of Chester.
